Must-Read Manners: How to Avoid Trouble at Japanese Coin Laundries

It’s Not Just About Rules, It’s About Harmony

Japan is famously known for its cleanliness and orderly society. This is largely due to the shared value of considering others around you.

Coin laundries are shared public spaces. While they are very safe and easy to use, following a few simple unwritten rules (manners) will ensure you have a smooth experience and avoid uncomfortable situations. Don’t worry, they are easy to follow!

The Golden Rule: Don’t “Abandoned” Your Clothes

This is the most important manner. Nothing frustrates a waiting customer more than a machine that finished 30 minutes ago but is still full of someone else’s clothes.

What to do: When you start a machine, check the finish time (e.g., “60 min”). Immediately set a timer on your smartphone for 5 minutes before it finishes. Be back at the shop and ready to take your clothes out as soon as the cycle ends.

Check Pockets TWICE!

Before loading your clothes, check every pocket. Japanese machines are powerful.

  • Tissues/Receipts: They will shred into millions of tiny white flakes, covering your clothes and the machine drum. It’s a nightmare to clean.
  • Lighters: Extremely dangerous in high-heat dryers.
  • Coins/Keys: Can damage the machine drum.

Can I Eat or Drink Here?

Generally, no. Unless the laundry is specifically designed as a “Laundry Cafe” with tables and a coffee machine, avoid eating or drinking inside. Spilling food attracts bugs and makes the folding tables dirty for others.

What NOT to Wash

For hygiene reasons, most public laundries strictly prohibit washing:

  • Pet items (blankets, beds used by animals)
  • Extremely soiled items (oil, heavy mud)
  • Diapers

Handling Other People’s Clothes

If all machines are full and one has clearly finished long ago, what should you do? In Japan, it is generally acceptable to carefully remove the person’s clothes and place them in one of the provided laundry baskets to free up the machine. However, to avoid trouble, it is best to wait if possible. Never throw them on the floor.

Conclusion

By following these simple courtesies, you help keep the space clean and efficient for everyone, including yourself. Enjoy a stress-free laundry experience!
